Prof. Gabriel B. Egbe
Gabriel Bassey Egbe is a Professor of English in the Department of English and Literary Studies, Veritas University, Abuja, Nigeria where he is the current Provost, College of Postgraduate Studies. He is a university teacher with over twenty years teaching experience within the context of English as a Second Language in a multilingual context. He has over 60 journal publications in addition to some creative works as well as several pedagogic publications on teaching English across primary, secondary and higher education levels in Nigeria. He is a former president (2014-2016) of the Literacy Promotion Association of Nigeria (LiPAN), formerly Reading Association of Nigeria(RAN), an affiliate of the International Literacy Association (ILA), Newark, USA. A member of the Board of Trustees of the Literacy Promotion Association of Nigeria, Professor Egbe is the Chair-elect of the International Development Committee-Africa, a regional affiliate of ILA, and Chair (2025-2027). He enjoys membership of the following academic and professional associations: Applied Linguistics and Literacy in Africa and the Diaspora Research Network; Platform Group of Advisors, Times Higher Education World University Rankings; English Language Teachers Association of Nigeria (ELTAN); English Scholars Association of Nigeria (ESAN); African English Language Teachers Association (Africa ELTA); among others. His research interests cover Applied English Linguistics, New Englishes and Literacies, English for Specific Purposes, Academic English Literacy, and Early Grade Reading. He is a recipient of a number of awards including research grants such as:
- Winner, 2010 International Reading Association (IRA) Constance McCullough Award for the Project, “Literacy Shelters for Hailstorm Displaced Communities in South-South Nigeria”
- 2013 Pan-African Leadership Grant for the Project “Reading Empowerment and Literacy Intervention Programme in Nigeria”
- Recipient of the Readers’ Award 2019 by StandTall Africa Initiative
- Ambassadorial Award 2019 as an Ambassador of the Effective Reading Campaign and Book distribution across Nigerian Schools by StandTall Africa Initiative
- Project Leader, Federal Ministry of Education IDEAS/IGF Project on Digital Skills Training 2022-2024
- Principal Investigator, CODE Teaching and Learning in Fragile Context “Quality Education for IDPs in Northern Nigeria: Phonological Awareness as Foundational Literacy Umbrella” (2023-2025).
- Consultant, British Council project on: “Strengthening Teachers’ English Proficiency (STEP) and Digital Literacy for Pre-service Teacher Training in Nigeria”, 2023-2024
